If I Had A Heisman Trophy Vote

The Heisman Trophy is the "Most Prestigious Award in College Football".  According to the Heisman Trophy website, "The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. The Heisman Trophy Trust ensures the continuation and integrity of this award."  

The winner is not only a fantastic football player, but also someone with great character and integrity.  It is and should always be an award given to an admirable player both on and off the field.  There is a high level of prestige and honor that comes along with the Heisman Trophy, an award to not be taken lightly by voters, candidates, winners and even fans.

The Heisman Trophy Ceremony is tomorrow, Saturday, December 14th.  This year's six Heisman Finalists are:

Jordan Lynch, Northern Illinois University

Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M University

Tre Mason, Auburn University

AJ McCarron, University of Alabama

Andre Williams, Boston College

Jameis Winston, Florida State University

Jameis Winston has been a stand out candidate for the trophy from the beginning of the season.  The red-shirt freshman Quarterback has put up ridiculous numbers and beaten all of his opponents by an average 40-something points.  The odds that he won't be our Heisman Trophy winner are extremely slim.  I heard (aka, saw on Twitter) that you have to bet $150 in order to win $1.  Jameis Winston definitely deserves the Heisman Trophy for his efforts on the field, there's no doubt about it.  But what about off the field.  What about his character and integrity, things that are more important in a man than his football statistics. 

Jameis Winston was recently accused of rape.  It was pretty clear, to me and to everyone else who cares, that the Heisman Trophy voters were waiting/hoping for a decision to be made in Jameis Winston's sexual assault case before casting their ballots.  Understood.  Why would you vote for someone who's just going to get the trophy taken away soon anyway. (See also: Reggie Bush)  What a waste.  So when I tuned into the press conference held by the Florida State Attorney last Thursday (December 5th) I was thinking Jameis Winston was either going to be our Heisman Trophy Winner or he was going to jail.  Pretty opposite extremes, but it was the truth.  As I continued to watch the press conference I grew more confused and uncomfortable.  There was a lot of snark, smiles and laughter for such a serious matter.  It was like after they announced that Winston would not be charged, the rest didn't matter.  I felt the prosecutor was proud of the fact that he did not know that Heisman ballots were due in the coming days and that Winston was a potential favorite as if not to give preferential treatment to an athlete, when in fact, that's his duty.  The whole things seems a bit fishy to me.

The attorney said that there was not enough evidence to prove that he did rape the girl, meaning there is a chance that he did.  I guess the whole innocent until proven guilty thing comes into play here, but I have to question the character and integrity of a man (boy, really.  He's only 19) that is being accused of rape.  I wouldn't vote for Jameis Winston because the mission of the Heisman Trophy clearly states, "outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity".

The Heisman trophy needs to go to an admirable player both on and off the field!  That may not always be the actual case, but that's what is supposed to happen.  So what about the other finalists, or perhaps some that didn't make the cut?  My top 4 candidates for the Heisman Trophy would be: Johnny Manziel, Tre Mason, Aaron Murray and AJ McCarron.  

Johnny Manziel was the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner and a very deserving one.  He is an exciting player to watch.  Maybe the most exciting in all of college football.  I may not agree with his actions but you can't knock his playing style.  He can make an 11 yard run look like the run of the year!  Numbers wise, he had an even better 2013 season than he did in 2012, but I would not give him the trophy again this year in part due to his irresponsible actions in the off season.  

Aaron Murray is an outstanding QB dispute his team's overall record.  I think if the UGA defense was better or if they hadn't suffered so many injuries this season we'd be having a totally different conversation about the University of Georgia right now!  But the team's record doesn't make Aaron Murray any less of a quarterback.  He put up record-breaking numbers this season and still deserves recognition after his season-ending torn ACL the second to last game of the season.  I already told you he is a wonderful QB and from what I can see he is an all around wonderful guy!  Check out this string of tweets from Heisman voter, Gene Sapakoff, on why he would have voted for Aaron Murray if Jameis Winston was guilty and charged with rape.  Very Compelling.  

 

But, if I had a Heisman Trophy vote, I'd vote for AJ McCarron.  I know the stats are for the current year, but the kid is a great football player and quarterback with 2 championships, 3 losses, and only 13 interceptions.  For his career.  He handles himself well in all situations that I've seen.  He knows he is a leader and a role model and does not take that role lightly.  He is a fantastic football player and if this story doesn't prove his character and integrity, I don't know what does!

National Championship Predictions

As sad as it is, this week is the last time we will have BCS standings, ever.  It's the last time College Football players, coaches, and fans will anxiously await their "fate".  Next year College Football adopts a playoff system starting with 4 teams.  Those 4 teams will play for their spot in the National Championship Game.  This weekend is the last time the National Championship contenders will be determined by "campaigning" and votes.  College Football is changing, in some ways for the better and others for the worse, but regardless of opinion, it's really the end of an era.

There are currently 5 teams in contention for the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in College Football and a shot at the National Championship Trophy.  Those teams are:

#1 FSU          

#2 Ohio State

#3 Auburn    

#4 Alabama  

#5 Missouri   

The SEC (Auburn vs. Missouri), ACC (FSU vs. Duke), and Big Ten (Ohio State vs. Michigan State) Championship Games are all this weekend which will ultimately determine the final rankings/fate of these teams heading into Bowl Season.  Alabama is the only team not playing this weekend.  If FSU and Ohio State both win, they will have undefeated records and therefore the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the rankings and bids to the National Championship Game.  Done deal.  Regardless if people think a one loss SEC team is better than an undefeated ACC or Big Ten team, an undefeated season for any BCS team is not easy and that alone deserves a shot at the title.

There's no reason to believe that Florida State will not win on Saturday.  The numbers they have been putting up game after game are just outstanding.  And especially now with charges being dropped against Jameis Winston, I can't see the Seminoles losing.

Ohio State had a sub-par performance against Michigan last week, but ultimately came out with the win.  I think the hype of rivalry week and playing in The Big House got the best of them, they'll shake it off before heading into tomorrow's Championship game against Michigan State.

But what if one of them loses?  What if they both lose?  What will happen then?  In the event that FSU or Ohio State loses, that's when the SEC has a fair case for one of theirs to head to the National Championship Game for the ump-teenth year in a row.

If Auburn wins, they will have beaten 9 bowl eligible teams this season.  Pretty impressive, but Auburn also got extremely lucky this year. (See also: Johnny Manziel getting injured against Auburn, last minute answered prayer against Georgia, and well, beating Alabama).  I have to admit though, I was rooting for Auburn in the Iron Bowl.  How could I not root for the underdog, a team that went from zero conference wins to competing for the division title?

Alabama's dramatic, late-in-the-season loss to Auburn is enough to take them out of the National Championship talk for good.  If God is an Alabama fan, Ohio State and Auburn will lose on Saturday (and if FSU loses, we'll know for sure that God wants Alabama for compete for the title for the 3rd consecutive year).  If none of that happens, I believe we've seen the end of this Alabama dynasty!

What about a case for Mizzou?  Missouri is a great all around team.  They're great at passing and running; stopping and blocking.  Numbers don't necessarily show their dominance, but that's because they've blown their opponents away.  If Mizzou wins and Ohio State loses, they'll have to make a case against Alabama.  A Mizzou vs FSU National Championship game would be a great match-up between two teams who have showed pure dominance over their opponents throughout the season. 

Regardless of who plays for the National Championship Title, no one wants to see a boring blow out like we had last year.

My prediction is Florida State vs. Ohio State!

There's a slim chance we could have Ohio State vs. Alabama.  A game that would have been played out last year, had Ohio State been eligible... the suspense and excitement of this weekend literally has me on the edge of my seat, but I doubt it will top the events of last week!!!

Game to Watch :: Week 11

I am still in shock that Stanford upset Oregon last night, effectively ending the Ducks' BCS hopes and Mariota's campaign for Heisman.  I was really rooting for Oregon this season and have said that I didn't think "they" gave them enough credit.  I just can't believe it, but that's sports and one of the things I love most about it!

A quote from one of my favorite shows, One Tree Hill, stands out to me today..

"When I watch a game it reminds me that we all have greatness inside of us.  You know, on any given day an underdog can rise up.  It gives me hope!"

And though I might be a day late on the actual game to watch for this week, my pick is the Alabama/LSU game.

The highly anticipated battle of the SEC West is upon us as #1 Alabama takes on #10 LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday Night. 

Though LSU will not be in contention for the National Championship trophy with 2 three-point losses to both Georgia and Ole Miss, this game still weighs heavily on the players, coaches and fans from both teams.

Now, more than ever, Alabama needs to retain their perfection as a loss will more than likely cost them a bid to the National Championship Game for the third consecutive year.  I think they’ll be okay though.    BAMA by 14.

Game to Watch :: Week 10

The rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State is one of the biggest in the Big Ten Conference and the teams are neck and neck in the rankings at 21 and 22 respectively. 

The Wolverine offense has been explosive, while Michigan State is currently #3 in the nation in scoring defense.  Both teams have one loss and opposite strengths, which makes this an interesting match-up and exciting rivalry game.

Game to Watch :: Week 7

I'm sure you could have guessed that my game to watch this week is Rutgers' biggest rivalry game for the season!!!  Tonight the Scarlet Knights take on the Louisville Cardinals at Papa John's stadium for what is potentially the end of a rivalry.  This is the last time the teams will meet as conference rivals in the American Athletic Conference, formerly the Big East.  Next year Rutgers moves on to the Big Ten, while Louisville will become part of the ACC.

The rivalry between Rutgers and Louisville really took off after the Scarlet Knights upset the Cardinals, then ranked #4 with BCS potential, with a score of 28-25 in 2006.  This is considered the greatest win in Rutgers school history.  Since then Rutgers has only beaten Louisville twice in 2008 and 2009.  The 2012 loss to the Cardinals was a devastating one.

This year, Rutgers defense has struggled against NFL level quarterbacks like Carr (Fresno State) and Gilbert (SMU), where both teams put up 50+ points.  Teddy Bridgewater is a potential #1 draft pick as well as Heisman candidate, which spells trouble for the Scarlet Knight's defense.  In Rutgers favor, Louisville's leading receiver, DeVante Parker, may be out due to a right shoulder injury.  Though the Cardinals have a lot of depth at wide reciever, it will force them to play untested players into the line up on a short week.  This is Louisville and Teddy Bridgewater's first true test of the season and possibly without a key player.

The last six times these schools played each other the games were decided by three points or less.  Will Rutgers be able to keep the streak of a close and exciting game alive, especially with the end of the rivalry in sight?

All I'm saying is::

Side note:  Obviously I'm wearing red and black today to support RU.  It's a shame Louisville has the same colors.  I tried to take an outfit picture and it didn't work out.   It's definitely more difficult than it looks.  Props to fashion bloggers....

Game to Watch :: Week 5

This week the game to watch is the highly anticipated match-up between #9 Georgia vs #6 LSU.  LSU QB Zack Mettenberger used to be at Gerogia in 2010 before being kicked off the team (he was arrested and received 5 misdemeanors for underage drinking, fake id, etc).  He and current Georgia QB Aaron Murray were battling for playing time!  That "drama" aside, both UGA and LSU have exciting offenses and powerful defenses, which ensures its going to be a game you don't want to miss!!

LSU is currently 4-0 and looking for a trip to the Georgia Dome in December for the SEC Championship  Game.  Mettenberger has been flawless so far in 2013 with a highly successful running game.  The offense has clicked and the defense is strong.  They're the whole package!

Georgia needs to stop Mettenburger in order to be successful in this game.  They need to prove that their win against South Carolina was not just a fluke and that they have what it takes to be the best in the SEC East.

If LSU wins, their chances of being the team at the Georgia Dome in December goes up.  Is there a championship title in their future?

Oh and I'll be at the game!!!!!! :) I am so excited for my first game "Between the Hedges"!!

Game to Watch :: Week 3

Since I linked up with Helene yesterday, my Game to Watch was postponed until today!!

The game to watch this week is definitely Texas A&M vs Alabama.  The Crimson Tide are going to be looking for revenge against the Aggies in what's sure to be a great rematch!

In November 2012, the Alabama vs. Texas A&M game was the one that truly put Johnny Manziel in high contention for the Heisman Trophy as the Aggies handed the reigning National Champions their first and only loss of the season.  This Saturday #1 Alabama will seek revenge against #6 Texas A&M, just three weeks into the season and this time in College Station.  Alabama is coming off a bye week and sub par performance, yet win, against Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.  So far, Texas A&M has two blow-out wins against two unranked teams and played one of the four halves without Johnny Football.  

But what will it take for Texas A&M to upset Alabama once again?

 This year Alabama is much more aware of what Texas A&M can do.  Last year was the first time the schools played each other since 1988.  Alabama was not familiar with the Aggies.  Texas A&M played in the BIG 12 and 2012 was their inaugural season in the SEC.  Alabama was coming off a big win against LSU, and may have been over confident leading into a game against Texas A&M, then ranked 15. 

This week the Crimson Tide will be looking for revenge.  Nick Saban’s record coming off a bye week/ more than one week to prepare for any given team is 7-3 since 2008.  Not as impressive as one may have thought.  Nick Saban said in an October 2010 interview, “it's not an advantage or disadvantage to have a bye week. It probably depends a lot on the circumstances."  This being said, Nick Saban has been labeled the “Master of Rematch Games” by DallasNews.com.  Since becoming an SEC coach in 2000, Nick Saban is 15-2 in rematch games the year after his team lost.  The revenge is what the Aggies should be worried about, not the bye week. 

So what will it take for the Aggies to beat the Crimson Tide?

First, Alabama has a young offensive line, with 3 starters going to the NFL.  They are vulnerable to blitz and pressure, specifically up the middle of the O-line.  It would benefit Texas A&M to blitz and change defensive sets to confuse the blocking strategies for a young Alabama offense.

 

Second, Texas A&M needs to take away Alabama’s traditionally successful running game.  They need to force AJ McCarron and Alabama to become one-dimensional and throw the ball!  Texas A&M can't allow 65+ yard touchdowns like they did against Sam Houston State this past weekend.  

Third, offensively Texas A&M needs to spread the Alabama defense out and force one on one matches.  They need to let Johnny throw into one-on-one coverage or let him use his legs to gain yardage when the Alabama coverage takes away the pass.  Manziel is a mobile quarterback, which has served as a threat to the Alabama defense in the past.  

 Johnny needs to produce numbers like he did last year in the game that ultimately gave him the title, "Johnny Football".  Texas A&M started off the game with 20 points in the first quarter.  Johnny threw for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns as well as running for 92 more yards.  That needs to happen again.  

Lastly, Texas A&M needs to remain a team!  It’s not all about one guy on or off the field.  They need to make sure they work together against a powerhouse team like Alabama.  This is their first true test of the season and they can’t fall apart. 

This Texas A&M vs. Alabama rematch is sure to be a wonderful game and live up to the hype.  Though this game is much earlier in the season, it's going to tell a lot about what's to come.  The winner of this game has a huge chance of making it not only to the SEC Championship Game, but also to the BCS National Championship!

I'm off to Penn State for the weekend!  This will be my first official game at Beaver Stadium.  I went to Blue/White weekend (the spring game) as a junior in high school when my mom was shamelessly trying to persuade me to go there.  Her dream has come true as my youngest sister is currently a freshman at Penn State.  Here's something I never thought I'd say... WE ARE...  no, I just can't!

Game to Watch :: Week 2

As much as I wanted to pick Georgia vs South Carolina as my Game To Watch, I couldn't pick the Georgia game for the second week in a row.  I picked Notre Dame at Michigan as my Game To Watch for this week.  But let me tell you, that UGA/USC game is gonna be a great one too!

Notre Dame and Michigan are both power house teams and programs in College Football.  Notre Dame is coming back from an outstanding 2012 season and sub par National Championship performance.  And although they've lost some key defensive players they remain a force to be reckoned with.

Michigan is lacking depth in the running back department with starter Fitzgerald Toussaint loosing his back-up, Drake Johnson to a torn ACL, leaving true-freshman & 5-star recruit, Derrick Green as primary back-up.  Will he be able to handle Notre Dame's defense?  Will the Michigan O-line be able to open running lanes for the RBs, especially when center, Jack Miller, looked like he didn't know what he was doing last week against Central Michigan?  Michigan's offense is new-er, three new starters to be exact and they'll be going up against big-time defensive players with NFL written all over them.

I'm saying Notre Dame over Michigan.  I don't think Michigan has what it takes to out play Notre Dame's defense.

Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game Experience

This weekend marked the start of the 2013 College Football season and as you know, I could not be more excited!!!

This weekend I had the opportunity to work in the Press Box of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game!!!  I met the people of the Chick-fil-A Bowl at the SEC Media Days and they invited me to attend their game in Atlanta.  It was such a wonderful day and I am so grateful for this experience.   

 I arrived at the Georgia Dome at 10:30 a.m. ready to work all sorts of game day operations from set-up, to social media, Press Box operations, etc.

The morning consisted of getting the press box ready.  We put out programs, name cards, information packets, media guides, etc for everyone "press" related.

Things settled down for us, and people started arriving- the media & fans.  The Georgia Dome became packed with people in both Crimson and Orange.  Then the teams made their entrances while Chick-fil-A cows parachuted from the "sky" and the game got underway.

The game started out with Virginia Tech going 0-3 and Alabama answered with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Christion Jones.  What a start!  Virginia Tech struggled to make it down the field barely passing the 40 yard line.  Alabama scored again, Virginia Tech answered with a touchdown of their own and the Dome was the quietest it was all day.  BAMA fans were shocked the game wouldn't be a shut out.  

Alabama's offense looked less than National Championship material, but had great assistance from Christion Jones on special teams as he scored another touchdown on a Kickoff return.   At halftime Crimson Tide led the Hokies, 28-10. 

The second half was a bit of a snooze fest with Alabama and Virginia Tech punting back and forth.  Though Alabama came out with a win (35-10) and ultimately got to wear the Old Leather Helmet (a Chick-fil-A Bowl Tradition) their quest for a three-peat needs some convincing.  For their sake, let's hope this bye week is used to clean up the basics before they face Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M.  We all know Alabama is going to be looking for some revenge and after the way Johnny's been acting lately, he deserves it!

 While watching the game I also served as a liaison to the University of Alabama Sports Information Staff.  I made sure that they had anything they needed.  When they wanted to distribute stats, I made sure everyone in the press box received them.  When they had a question, if I didn't know the answer, I found someone who did.  I loved doing this because I could still watch the game and formed relationships while doing it!  :)

After the game I got quotes from the players to be used for media purposes!  It was such a fun day and a wonderful event to be a part of!  I can't wait for the next one! :)

Game to Watch :: Week 1

COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS HERE!!!!!!  Finally!

To kick off the 2013 College Football Season, I'm saying the game to watch is (No. 8) Clemson University vs. (No.5) The University of Georgia.  Kick off for this game is Saturday at 8:00 p.m. (EST).

Noone likes to lose, especially in week one!  This game will provide a preview for what's in store for these two teams for the rest of the season.  Georgia ended the 2012 season hot- winning their last 6 regular season games, nearly beating Alabama in the SEC Championship Game and then beating Nebraska in the Capitol One Bowl.  Can that momentum carry over to the 2013 season?

The University of Georgia is returning their entire offensive line, which will be lead by Quarterback, Aaron Murray for one more season.  The defense has some new faces as they only have 3 returning players and lost 4 of last year's top tackles.  As long as the offense can outscore the defense UGA should be in good shape.

But then there's Clemson.  Clemson has 12 starters remaining from an 11-2 season and a big upset over LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.  Clemson has lost some key players on both offense and defense.  This will now put more pressure of QB, Tahj Boyd to make sure execution is top notch.

The Bulldogs and Tigers have not played each other in 10 years.  And on that day UGA shut-out Clemson, 30-0.  That's the last time the Tigers were shut out.

  Both teams have wonderful talent and the potential to make it to their conference championships.  And we'll see what happens from there.  You already know my prediction.

For this game, I say the Bulldogs over the Tigers!!

I'll obviously be watching Rutgers play Fresno State tonight, even though the game doesn't start until 10:30 p.m. (EST)!! Who's with me?

CFB Preview :: National Championship Prospects

I don't know about you, but I literally can not wait for football to start!  ONE. MORE. WEEK.  I can't wait to be able to talk about actual games and performances rather than what might happen.

And ironically, today I'm talking about who my top prospects for the BCS National Championship are.

It's no secret that the favorites going into the season are Alabama and Ohio State.  They both have definitely proved they have the talent on their roster to be the best.

You can't knock the dynasty that Nick Saban continues to build at Alabama.  The University of Alabama has won 3 National Championships in the past 4 years.  They have one more year with some key play makers, like Quarterback AJ McCarron, Running Back TJ Yeldon, and Wide Receiver Amari Cooper still on the roster.  If they can win at least 10 or 11 games, I'm sure they'll be heading to Pasadena to compete for the title yet again!

And what about Urban Meyer's Buckeyes?  Braxton Miller and Philly Brown have great QB/WR chemistry.  Despite lots of close games, Ohio State had an undefeated 2012 season.  They were banned from post season play and therefore did not compete in the National Championship Game. Bummer.  If it wasn't for that, a game of The University of Alabama vs Ohio State University could have been played out last season.

But is anyone seeing any upsets?

Since the SEC Media Days I've fallen more in love with (code for became a bigger fan of) The University of Georgia. Fun Fact: My Grandpa played at UGA in the 50's before having an injury and later getting drafted into the Korean War.  I know I said that I was impressed with the University of Tennessee and I was, but we all know they have a lot of work to do before they get to the National Championship.

Back to the University of Georgia.  They were one defensive stand away from beating Alabama in the 2012 SEC Championship game.  They're going to be a dominate force in the SEC this year.  It's going to be interesting to see who makes it to the SEC Championship game and then who potentially goes onto Pasadena for the National Championship Title.  Aaron Murray is an outstanding Quarterback and was just voted 1st team all-conference by the coaches of the SEC, beating out Manziel and McCarron.  I would love to see the Dawgs make it to Pasadena for Murray's last season!  

If smiles could win football games..... :)

The SEC as a whole is a dominant conference.  No doubt.  There's a lot of rebuilding going on with 4 new coaches, but there's also a lot of power.  The University of Alabama, The University of Georgia, and The University of Florida all have the potential to go all. the. way.

Other schools that are going to be on my radar as National Championship hopefuls are Oregon, Texas A&M, Clemson, South Carolina, Stanford, & Notre Dame.  Each of these teams have the potential and talent to make it to Pasadena, but they also have difficult schedules to over come.  It only takes a few upsets in a particular team's favor and BAM!, National Championship Game!  

I'm just so excited for the season to start and see how it all plays out!!!

 I mentioned in SEC Media Days recap that I was going to devote a post to elaborate on Johnny Manziel and the hype he received at the Media Days about his "actions" this off season.  Then Wright Thompson's piece on Johnny and his background was released, with Johnny's father making some questionable comments about him, but otherwise, provided some great insight (definitely worth reading).  And now news has surfaced that Johnny Manziel is being investigated by the NCAA (& Texas A&M) about possibly selling his autograph- which is against regulations.

Since winning the Heisman Trophy, Johnny Manziel has had quite the life.  He has attended parties, red carpet events, sporting events, and met celebrities, but also had to learn how to handle the new-found fame and never-ending attention/pressure of the media/fans!  And let's just say, he's still learning.

 Johnny has gotten into some trouble with things he's posted on social media and other poor choices he has made.  These include, but are not limited to:  Tweeting that he couldn't wait to leave College Station, being asked to leave the Manning Passing Academy early due to "over sleeping" and missing obligations (!!!!!!!), partying/drinking beer (he's only 20), and if the new allegations of him receiving monetary compensation for his autograph are true, it could cost him his college football career.

I'm not sure weather to feel bad for Johnny or think he brought this on himself.

He's a kid, we know this.  But he is also a "public figure" with an image for himself, his school and the sport of college football to uphold.  In each case (minus his new allegations) he has taken responsibility for his actions.  But that's just it.. he apologizes after he does it, knowing that he shouldn't have done it in the first place.

This is what makes me question Johnny's maturity level and wonder if he was ready for this "role"- regardless if it's a role that he's accepted or society has put him in.  I think he's immature not only for his age, but for someone of such "high regard".  His excuse, or really lack-there-of, for the Manning Academy being the top of my list.  Like com' on man, you couldn't be responsible enough to make sure you have an alarm set or back-up.  Even if he was drinking/hungover, he should have been there.  He let down a lot of people that day, most of them being young kids and fans that look up to him.  I don't like that.

There have been College Football players that have won the Heisman Trophy at a young age before, and what makes Johnny different from them is, again, his maturity.  Take Tim Tebow for example.  He won the Heisman at a young sophomore.  He still had years left to mature in college and grow as a player.  He had the attention just like Johnny is experiencing, but did not handle it the same way!  I'm not saying I'm a fan of Tebow's, or that I'm not.  Truthfully, I'm indifferent.  I'm just saying that their maturity levels at that age were different.

Other athletes Johnny's age, who granted may not have won such a prestigious award, but are in the eyes of the media non-the-less, have not acted the way Johnny has during the off-season. 

AJ McCarron, University of Alabama Quarterback and 2-time National Champion, is a great example of someone who knows he's looked at to set an example.  At the SEC Media Days he said, "I want to be that type of guy that younger kids can look up to. I want them to have a role model."  This is not me saying that McCarron deserved the Heisman, but I think he might have been able to handle himself a little better in the after math! (Maybe next we'll talk about what it will take for him to win in 2013)

Its been pointed out by the media that Bryce Harper, Outfielder for the Washington Nationals, is less than 2 months older than Johnny and the maturity levels are on opposite sides of the spectrum.  It makes me wonder,  does Johnny not take his "role" seriously?  No one would care if some other, "regular" student at Texas A&M said they couldn't wait to leave College Station.  But it has a completely different meaning coming from "Johnny Football".  And that's also where the maturity comes in.  He just can't say stuff like that and the fact that he took to Twitter to rant about "a parking ticket" can be deemed immature.  Johnny said,  "At points in time, I feel like it was blown out of proportion. But I should have known better," as he addressed the media at the SEC Media Days!

Whether you agree with the NCAA rules that say that students on athletic scholarship are not allowed  to work or accept monetary compensation are "right" (and I'll tell ya, I don't- Texas A&M is making boat loads of money off this kid and he gets nothing in return? That's not fair), he broke them.  He knew the rules and knew the controversy that would arise if he broke them.  Johnny has shown that he is thinking "Me", not "We".  Which I think will hurt him down the road when the NFL is thinking about him.  (again, Bryce vs. Johnny)

Sure, his football skills and development as a young college football player and more specifically a Saturday in November at Alabama, put him on the map and in contention for the Heisman Trophy.  But was he ready to win it?  Was his ready to handle everything that came along with it- the media attention, the fan attention, the celebrity status, and everything as a whole?  Was he ready to live his life fully in the public eye?  I think it's safe to say, no.

But really, Johnny didn't choose this and all of it does not make him any less deserving of winning the Heisman Trophy or any less of a football player.  Actually, we'll be able to judge that better once the season starts.  You know that if he doesn't play to people's standards right off the bat, everyone is going to blame it on his shenanigans in the off season.  And well, now I guess we have to worry about if he'll even be playing at all.

Based on the 2012 season, Johnny Manziel earned the Heisman and should reap the benefits.  He should just be more mature in the decisions and choices he makes, knowing very well that everyone is watching and that people are looking to him to be a role model, whether he wants to be or not.  

SEC MEDIA DAYS

Last week I gave you a little preview of my love for the SEC and everything it stands for in College Football, but what I left out is that I had been invited and was on my way to attend the SEC Football MEDIA DAYS!!!!  

This is every girl's dream, right?  Well for me, it was amazing and a wonderful experience that I will never forget!!

As a SEC Media Days, Media Relations Assistant I was assigned various tasks like transcribing player quotes as they were assigned and holding the mic for the media to ask coaches questions during press conferences. I also had the responsibility (along with the other volunteers/assistants) of making sure people without credentials (aka crazed fans) didn't get into the area of the conference where all of the media, coaches and players were bouncing around from room to room.

Through the three days of the conference, which was in Hoover, Alabama, I met so many people, learned so much about the schools in the SEC and realized that this is, for sure, the field I want to be in for my career.  I was on cloud 9 the whole time!

All 14 teams in the Southeastern Conference attended the event throughout the 3 days.  Each school brought their Head Coach and 3 players as well as staff personnel.  Each team had a designated day and time to address the media.  They bounced around from room to room on an average of 10 minute intervals.  Once their "rounds" were done, the schools would leave, some with more commotion from fans than others, and that was it!

Johnny Manziel, as you could imagine, brought a lot of hype to the Media Days.  He's gotten into some trouble with things he's posted on social media and most recently was asked to leave the Manning Passing Academy early due to "over sleeping" and missing a meeting.  And as I'm sure you guessed, that's the type of stuff the media focused on during their time with Johnny and not really about the actual game of football.  I'm going to post about him and his new found fame since becoming the first Freshman Heisman Trophy Winner, so stay tuned for that!

There are 4 new coaches in the SEC this year, Bret Bielema (University of Arkansas), Butch Jones (University of Tennessee), Gus Malzahn (Auburn University), and Mark Stoops (University of Kentucky).  I was fortunate enough to hear all four of them address the media and I have to say that Butch Jones impressed me the most.  I got good vibes from him and he sounded solid in responses, which is important.  Coach Jones said, "We have to focus on the process, not the end result."  I like this because it shows his commitment to enhancing the program at the University of Tennessee, which first and fore most includes the players, it's not just about winning on the field, but off the field as well.  I'm exciting to see what he accomplishes at the University of Tennessee, especially since the program has been struggling for a few years now!

There were some players who impressed me as well, not for the answers to the questions they were asked, but for the way they handled themselves.  AJ McCarron (QB, University of Alabama) and Aaron Murray (QB, University of Georgia) come to mind.  Both of these guys acted like they were excited to be there.  They walked around with smiles on their faces and looked like they were actually enjoying themselves.  It was refreshing.  They were willing to talk to people and usually willing to take pictures.  I'm not saying that other players didn't do that, but I just noticed them doing it.  I think this shows the type of young men they are.  It shows that they're proud of the position they're in, to represent their school and know they are role models to tons of kids who look up to them!  AJ even wore a bow tie with Breast Cancer Ribbons on it in support of his cousin, who was recently diagnosed.  It's good character in athletes that make me love the game even more!!

And last, but not least, I got to meet David Pollack, host and analyst for ESPN (College Game Day and Thursday Night Football), which was the icing on the cake! :)

I'm so grateful for this experience and can't wait to explore a career working in college athletics!

College Football, According to Karra

Let's face it, Fall is quickly creeping up on us.  And Fall to me means FOOTBALL, specifically College Football.  College Football is one of my favorite things and Fall is my favorite time of year because of it.  I love it and everything that comes with it- games, rivalries, traditions, tailgates, family & friends, the list goes on.... 

In attempt to gain experience and exposure with my writing, since this is a path I would like to see my career take, I will be sharing articles I write pertaining to sports.  I plan to post once a week leading up to the season as well as throughout.

I'm not usually one to voice my opinion involving scandals or other controversial matters.  I prefer to keep those types of things to myself, but this is different.  This one hits extremely close to home and effects one of the things I am most passionate about- my alma mater and first love, Rutgers University.  

On Tuesday video tapes of Rutgers Basketball Coach, Mike Rice, being physically and verbally abusive to players surfaced through ESPN. 

Mike Rice was then fired on Wednesday.  

Thursday there was an abundance of rumors flying around all types of media outlets that Athletic Director, Tim Pernetti was in jeopardy of losing his job as well.  

I agree that Coach Rice needed to be fired, but think Tim Pernetti should remain the Athletics Director at Rutgers for many reasons.  First being when Pernetti first learned of Rice's antics during practice he took action which was supported by Rutgers Administration including fining, suspending and forcing Rice to attend anger management classes as well as threatening any further behavior of this kind.  Second, Tim Pernetti has done more for Rutgers Athletics than I'm sure any outsider or even avid sports fan may realize.  He has not only decreased reliability on university funding, but has enhanced all athletic programs and most importantly has made Rutgers a part of the Big 10 Conference starting in 2014. 

The Rutgers Community and others have spoken out via Facebook in the group "I support Tim Pernetti" as well as through the hashtag #KeepPernetti via Twitter.  Great points were made in counter to NJ State Senator Steve Sweeney stating "for the good of the school, its students and its faculty, he should either resign or be removed from his position immediately".  Among these points were the fact that Sweeney (and the state) was once against gay marriage, have since changed their minds and still have their jobs.  Tim Pernetti as well as other Rutgers Administration took necessary steps in resolving the issue in December when the footage was first brought to their attention.  They have since changed their minds in their initial reaction.  (Gay Marriage is now legal, Mike Rice is now fired.  End of story.)

Tim Pernetti seeked independent advise in the matter and gave public punishment when this issue was first brought to his attention in November.  The university (and state, for that matter) is allowing the media to sway their decision.  The media consists of people who know nothing about the history of the university or how its athletics have grown under the direction of Tim Pernetti.  They should not be influential in this crucial decision, but unfortunately that is not the case.  Once again, the media is getting what it thinks it wants. 

Has Steve Sweeney met Tim Pernetti?  This is a serious question that I would like to know the answer to.  I indeed have met Tim Pernetti a number of times.  If Steve Sweeney knew Tim Pernetti he would not be questioning his position with Rutgers University, but instead would know his amazing character and overall love for the university.  He would know that Tim Pernetti was more than just an Athletic Director.  How many other schools would have this outcry of support for their Athletic Director? Not many.  Support for the coaches, yes, but not Athletic Directors.  Tim Pernetti has made it his job to be one with the Rutgers community and has arguably done more for Rutgers Athletics than any one else in the past.

I am extremely saddened by Rutgers decision to force him to choose between resigning or being fired as this is a decision that will effect Rutgers University, its athletics and community long after this scandal is put to rest. 

I fully believe Tim Pernetti should remain the Athletic Director of Rutgers University and can not express the sadness I felt when reading his Letter of Resignation just moments ago.

Superbowl XLVII

 aka: Har-bowl, Beyonce-Bowl, Blackout-Bowl.

The Superbowl has always been a guaranteed night of fun, food, laughter and of course football, duh.  Growing up, my neighborhood had tons of traditions.  Just like my family, the neighborhood liked to throw a party for everything- Christmas, Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day Turkey Bowl- and the Superbowl was no exception.

The two weeks leading up to the game a block pool went around filling the boxes with names of potential winners.  On the day of the game, the parents went to the same house every year for a party to watch the game- aka dads watched the game, while the moms talked.  Kids weren't invited, so most of the kids would come to my house for our own party!  We were usually more interested in the commercials and half time show than the actual game, pretty standard. 

The kids (and adults) played a game called the "Commercial Game".  This was my favorite thing about the Superbowl.  We had a board with different categories of commercials on it and during the game you would place a dollar on the category that you thought would be the first commercial played of the break.  If your category won, you won the money on the board.  Trust me, it's a lot more fun than it may seem.  I made a board and brought it to my Superbowl parties in college and everyone loved it.

You could also include other categories like insurance, clothing, fast food, etc.  

I love how commercials are as crucial a part of the Superbowl viewing experience as the Halftime Show and the game itself.  Each year I look forward to the commercials regardless of who's playing the game.  Nerd Alert: I would love to be part of the marketing/advertising team that comes up with some of these spots. 

This year without a doubt my favorite commercial was the Budweiser "Brotherhood" commercial.  I literally almost cried.  I always love the Budweiser commercials because I love horses and Clydesdale are gorgeous, but this year OMG, the emotion in that commercial was amazing.  And it showed a true relationship between a man and his horse! I absolutely loved it.  Somehow my mom missed the commercial during the game, imagine that, so when I came home and started talking about it, she was dying to see it.  My mom and I share the same love for horse and I knew she was going to love it.  She cried, full on tears, when she watched it.  Twice.

Living in the Philadelphia area and being raised an Eagles fan, there's not usually much excitement late in the post season, and this year- forget about it.  There was the exception of Superbowl XXXIX, when the Eagles lost to the Patriots or in the 2008 post-season when they lost to the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game- off the top of my head.  But other than that the Superbowl has been more about friends and fun, rather than the actual game of football.  Yeah, I said it!

This year the Superbowl brought an interesting camaraderie for all viewers- brothers coaching against each other in the biggest game of their career.  Forget Ravens vs 49ers, it was John Harbaugh vs Jim Harbaugh!  What are the chances that brothers would both be head coaches in the NFL, let alone make it to the Superbowl, and then to be playing against each other in the same one?  Sheesh, talk about pressure.  Leading up to the biggest game in the sport, I couldn't help but think that the winning brother would forever have the ultimate bragging rights:  "I beat you in the Superbowl"!!!!  I'm sure they would be happy for and proud of the other one to have made it to the Superbowl, but having to compete for the title must have brought so many more emotions.  I would love to be a fly on the wall come Easter dinner, or the next big family gathering for that matter.

I have since watched a number of interviews which talked about the topic of brothers competing for the title.  The Harbaughs seem like a very nice family with great values.  I love hearing about how men in sports, especially coaches, were raised and how they came to love the sport.  I love when coaches add good character to the team and are there for the love of the game and not just for the name or paycheck.  That's what makes sports worthwhile.

During an interview I saw of John and Jim's parents, Jack and Jackie, about the game, there was a clip of the brothers exchanging words during warm-ups ... John: "Love you man."  Jim: "I love you too." John: "I'm so proud of you!" Jim: "No matter how it comes out, we're brothers, they can't change that!"  John: "That's exactly right!" >> How precious?  Seriously.

As you could guess, I have no real tie or favoritism towards either team that played in Sunday Night's game, but once Ray Lewis had announced he was retiring at the end of the season I started rooting for the Baltimore Ravens.  I wanted to see an icon like him go out the best way possible- a Superbowl Champion!  I know that people keep bringing up his past and whatever the truth may be, he also happens to be the best Linebacker in the game right now and maybe even ever.  He's the Lawrence Taylor of this generation.  They changed the defense, they changed the game,  and they each changed the way the linebacker position is played- it's always sad to see an icon in sports leave their game.  Lots of kids want to be him, they look up to him and he's a leader.  He has won the respect of his teammates and those throughout the league.  He inspires people to achieve greatness, aside from his personal life or low points, but it's about how you over come those obstacles that determines character.  I'll admit, I don't know the whole story of what's happened with Ray Lewis in the past, but it seems like he's done a good job of changing that image.  People know who he is because of the way he played the game- that's what being a sports icon is all about!

Another reason to root for the Ravens: Ray Rice!  Ray Rice is a fellow Rutgers Alumni and part of RFamily.  He was a huge part in changing the face and reputation of Rutgers Football.  He's always been a great player to watch and root for!  Like any other team, school or organization,  everyone associated with the Block R is family and we root for each other.  There are two members of the RFamily on the Baltimore Ravens- Ray Rice and Alex Silvestro, as opposed to only one, Anthony Davis, on the San Fransisco 49ers, so I had to go with the team with more Scarlet Knights! :)

So let's talk football, finally, right?  The first half was dominated by the Baltimore Ravens.  Clearly.  The score was 21-6 at the half.  Then Beyonce stole the show.  Literally.  She was amazing.  She has always been amazing, but what a Halftime Show that was.  It's pretty safe to say that most people who were watching Beyonce perform forgot that this was just a Halftime Show, that she wasn't the entertainment for the rest of the night and shortly after, well with an unexpected 34 minute delay, a football game would resume with Jacoby Jones breaking an NFL post season record and returning a kick-off 108 yards.

After the New Orleans Superdome through a hissy-fit for a Beyonce encore, the 49ers gave the Ravens a run for their money, outscoring them 23-3 in less than 13 minutes and changing the momentum of the game.  In the 4th quarter, the Superbowl Champion Title became reachable for both teams.

Trailing by 5 with under 3 minutes of play, the 49ers made some questionable play calls leaving the ball in their own red-zone and in the hands of the Baltimore Ravens.  The 49ers forced Joe Flacco into the end-zone for a safety and with 5 seconds remaining on the clock, the Baltimore Ravens became Superbowl Champions!!!! The final score of the game: Baltimore Ravens 34; San Francisco 49ers 31!  


It goes without saying, I love the game of football.  Some may not think so, but it's such an emotional sport.  The love, pride, together-ness, and family that these teams build is so wonderful.  I hope that someday, my everyday work will be directly connected to the game or sports in general.

Call me crazy, but I literally started tearing up during Coach John Harbaugh's post game interview.  The respect and love he has for his brother, players, and everyone on the Baltimore Ravens staff is admirable.  Below is a portion of the interview, click HERE for the full interview on NFL.com.
